Redang Island, regionally known as Pulau Redang or simply "Redang " is among the biggest islands off the eastern coast of Malaysia.

It's a popular vacation island for Malaysians, almost all of whom come on package deals to one of the resorts. Redang is one of 9 islands, which form a sea park, and which offer snorkeling and diving prospects. Access is from Merang or Kuala Terengganu on boats controlled by the resorts ; there's also a little airport with services controlled by Berjaya Air from Singapore ( Seletar airfield ) and Kuala Lumpur ( Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport ). The island is also a very important conservation site for sea turtles. Previously, the gratuitous commercial exploitation of turtle eggs had caused less turtles returning to nest on the island. This has led the Terengganu local government to line up the Koperasi Setiajaya Pulau Redang in 1989, a cooperative targeting to develop and manage socio-economic programs that might improve the livelihood of Pulau Redang neighbors without risking its natural resources.[citation needed] The waters around Pulau Redang also contain 2 significant shipwrecks : HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Rebuff .

The ships were sunk here at the beginning of WWII, preparing the stage for the Japanese occupation of Malaya.
