Penang was initially part of the Malay Sultanate of Kedah. On eleven Aug 1786, Captain Francis Light of the English East India Company landed in Penang and renamed it Prince of Wales Island in honour of successor to the UK throne. Light then received it as a portion on his wedding to the child of the Sultan of Kedah. Light conceded Penang to the governing body of India and guaranteed the Sultan army protection from Siamese and Burmese militaries who were threatening Kedah. Light is now credited as the founding father of Penang.
