Pulau Pangkor is an island off the coast of Perak in north-west peninsular Malaysia, reached by ferry from Lumut. It's got a land area of only eight square kilometers, and a population of roughly 25,000 islanders. It is heavily promoted as a low-key traveller destination by the Malaysian central authority, but fishing and fish products remain major industries. Traditionally , Pangkor was a sanctuary for local fishermen, merchants and pirates. In the 17th century, the Dutch made a fort to attempt to regulate the Perak tin trade. In 1874, it was actually the site of an unprecedented bargain between the Brit govt and a possibility for the Perak throne ( The Pangkor Contract ), which commenced the English colonial domination of the Malay Spur . Pangkor is known for its fine beaches and a mixture of low budget to five star accommodations. Teluk Nipah and Coral Bay on the north west of the island is intensely well liked by visitors from Europe. The standard of sand in the Pasir Bogak Beach is far better than that somewhere else on the island. The sand is golden brown, quite like most leading prime beaches. There are some resorts in Teluk Nipah or Nipah Bay. Since the 2004 Indian Sea tsunami in Indonesia, Thailand and to a smaller extent the western coast of Malaysia in December 2004, there were less local travellers visiting Pangkor. BOOK NOW |
