Fraser's Hill is named after Louis James Fraser, a Scotsman who prospected for gold in Australia but finally struck tin here instead in the 1890s. Employing Chinese miners to do the tough work for him and earning his keep by operating mule trains down the mountain, Fraser set up opium and betting dens to extend his profits, which may have been a connection with his subsequent confusing disappearance.

The tin ran out in 1913, but the lush valley inside was rediscovered as a colonial hill resort that, thanks to its 1524 m elevation, enjoys significantly cooler temperatures than Kuala Lumpur. By 1922 a road had been cut through the mountains to the valley, which soon sprouted houses and even one of Malaya's first golfing courses.

Not too much has modified since, and Fraser's Hill keeps a splendidly peculiar mixed-up personality, where neighbors eat curries off banana leaves in an English cottage next to a golfing course while the call to prayer sounds from the mosque Orienting yourself in Fraser's Hill is straightforward enough : the entrance through the Opening is at the southwest corner of the valley and the "center " as such is at the crossover of Jalan Genting and Jalan Woman Guillemard, with the much-photographed clock tower marking the spot. Most eateries and shops are clustered here, while the golfing course takes up the base of the valley and bungalows and posh houses dot the hills all around.
